Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless: What’s the Difference?
Choosing the right style depends on your budget and the architectural “weight” you want the fence to have.
- Frameless Glass Fencing:
- The Look: Provides a completely unobstructed view. The glass panels are held in place by small stainless steel “spigots” at the base.
- Technical Specs: Uses thicker 12mm toughened safety glass because the panels must be structurally self-supporting.
- Cost: The premium option due to the glass thickness and specialized core-drilling required for installation.
- Semi-Frameless Glass Fencing:
- The Look: Features slim vertical posts (usually powder-coated aluminium or stainless steel) between each glass panel.
- Technical Specs: Uses slightly thinner 8mm or 10mm glass, as the posts provide the primary structural support.
- Cost: A more budget-friendly middle ground that still offers high visibility but with a more defined “border” look.
The 2026 Safety Standards (AS 1926.1-2012)
In South Australia, your glass fence must be more than beautiful, it must be legally compliant. Every installation we perform adheres to the following:
- The 1.2m Rule: The top of the glass must be at least 1200mm from the finished ground level.
- Gap Limits: To prevent a child from squeezing through or under, no gap between panels or between the glass and the ground can exceed 100mm.
- Toughened Safety Glass: All glass must meet AS 2208 (Safety Glazing Materials in Buildings) to ensure that in the rare event of a break, the glass shatters into small, harmless cubes rather than dangerous shards.
